Experimental Investigation of Non-Verbal Communication in Eating Disorders

This study aimed to be the first measure non-verbal communication in 25 eating disorder (ED) and non-ED control participants during a naturalistic social interaction incorporating positive, negative neutrally-valenced topics. The hypothesis, that ED would show significantly reduced facial emotional expression than controls, was not supported. Supporting second hypothesis of between-group differences behaviour, were less likely lean towards their interlocutor (d=.81) discussing negatively-valanced topics more positioned upright when positively-valenced (d=.1.09) controls. Irrespective valence, gaze on (d=.29) spent time looking down (d=.54), or away controls (d=.63). moved hands along with speech (d=.63) gestured fewer real/hypothetical/imagined images/actions/objects) (d=.57), irrespective valence. Instead, indicated discomfort interaction, touching nose (d=.89) playing nails (d=.95) often participants, regardless showed lowered electro-dermal activity (d=.60) supporting exploratory hypothesis.
